Virgin explains that they don’t have a buffet, unlike most cruise ships. From my point of view, this is not entirely true. Let’s say that they were able to modernize the concept. We are somewhere between a “food court” and what could be the “canteen” of a big startup. The place is called The Galley and brings together several styles of restaurants that can be associated with “street food”.
First of all, there are the dishes that you can take on the way, to eat away, in your cabin or you can eat it there. Sandwiches, wraps, rolls… there, it’s really startup-like, where you come to snack on something between 2 meetings… once again, a totally original concept on a cruise.
Afterwards, there are paninis, sandwiches, tacos, noodles, a salad bar and even a kebab… not to mention the classic hamburgers, cheeseburgers, including vegan versions. There, you can be served at the table rather than going to each stand to choose your dish.
The desserts are not left out. Drinks are unlimited (water, orange juice, teas, coffees, sodas…) but you have to pay for alcohol. A wine dispenser is self-service, just show your bracelet and choose one of the wines on offer. Coffees other than the classic Americano are also for a fee (espresso, cappuccino, etc.).
A pizzeria is located on deck 7. You place an order and come to pick up it, either to eat on site (part of the restaurant is located outside, on the promenade), or you ask for take-out, and you leave with its warm box, just like at home.
You can find snacks everywhere on the ship: ice cream, pastries, mini-sandwiches, sweets, and chocolates. Some are are so good (Peanut Brittle Black Chocolate 😍)…
One of the very pleasant places where I liked to eat on the go, while enjoying the view of the sea, was The Dockhouse, on deck 7, at the aft of the ship. The skewers were particularly good, especially those of octopus!
It is also possible to order food in the cabin. The service is chargeable ($5), with 2 exceptions: if your order includes a chargeable item, or if your cabin is part of the Rockstar Quarter (the place where some of the largest suites are located).
We tested breakfast in the cabin, as well as a meal during the day. The delivery is again original: everything is in a kind of sailor’s bag. It’s smart, and more practical than the usual trays. The other kinds of meals are delivered in the same way, at any time.
All of this is included in the price of the cruise, as are the 6 specialty restaurants..
