South America onboard Viking Jupiter (february 2024)

Boarding on Viking ships is completely seamless, with no significant waits. In Buenos Aires, the cruise terminal was under construction, and Viking had relocated its check-in area to an area adjacent to the terminal. Once our cruise documents were checked, a bus took us closer to the ship, without us having to worry about our luggage. We were on board. The cabin, announced as ready a little later during check-in, was in fact already ready. Our suitcases would be there within the hour.

One of the Viking’s features that I find very pleasant is that it extends its visits to certain ports over two days. Although embarkation takes place on a Monday, the ship will not depart Buenos Aires until late Tuesday. We will also be entitled to an overnight stay in Ushuaia, as well as in Valparaiso upon arrival.

The departure from Buenos Aires at sunset was spectacular.

The cabin is identical to the one we had previously. Some photos can be found in my article about the Iceland tour.

The two pools are very quiet, never crowded… and often even completely without anyone around or in them, all to yourself. The indoor pool can be opened to the outdoors with its removable roof, when the weather permits. The infinity pool at the rear is smaller but offers a view of the ship’s wake that you never tire of looking at, immersed in the calm.

The spa is also often very quiet. Access is free, and everything is provided (towel, bathrobe, sandals). The atmosphere is completely relaxing.

The dome, a 360° spherical cinema, remains a distinctive feature of this ship. It is both a screening venue for fascinating documentaries related to the ship’s journey. It can also be used as a planetarium, a venue for lectures on the stars and constellations, combining astronomy, astrophysics, and history.

The most fascinating thing, following the astronomy professor on board, is the practical part, in the evening on the upper point, at nightfall, with the help of the Captain who turns off the lighting environment for a moment, to optimize the sky observations. However, it’s difficult to capture it in a photo… sunsets, on the other hand, are much easier!

But the whole point of this cruise, even if the very pleasant environment that this ship provides is important, is the itinerary, around South America… next page.
